The landscapes and coastlines of Newfoundland and Labrador have shaped who I am as both a person and an artist. Living beside the Atlantic Ocean has given me a lifelong appreciation for the rugged beauty of our province—its dramatic cliffs, colourful fishing villages, quiet harbours, weathered boats, and ever-changing skies. These places are more than subjects for my paintings; they are part of my story and a constant source of inspiration.
As a Newfoundland artist, I am drawn to the moments that often go unnoticed: the glow of morning light on the water, the rich colours of a fishing stage, a lone dory resting along the shoreline, or the powerful waves that reshape the coast with every passing season. Each painting reflects my admiration for the people, history, and traditions that continue to define life in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Working primarily in acrylics, I approach each painting as an interpretation rather than a recreation. While photographs often provide the starting point, they serve only as a reference. Every piece begins with a loose sketch before layers of colour and texture gradually bring the composition to life. Throughout the process, I adjust shapes, deepen contrasts, and intensify colours until the painting reflects not just what I saw, but how the scene made me feel. My goal is to capture the emotion, atmosphere, and character of a place rather than simply document it.
Colour plays a central role in my work. Newfoundland’s landscape is filled with remarkable contrasts—from the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean and brilliant summer skies to the vivid colours of traditional homes, fishing boats, and coastal communities. I embrace these colours to create paintings that feel vibrant, energetic, and welcoming while remaining true to the spirit of the places that inspire them. From time to time, I also weave in a touch of Newfoundland humour, celebrating the unique personality and warmth that make our province so memorable.
