Behind the Brush: How I Create My Acrylic Paintings

Most of my paintings begins with a connection to Newfoundland and Labrador. Whether it’s the weathered fishing stages, colorful dories, rugged coastline, or the ever-changing light over the Atlantic, I find inspiration in the places and moments that have become part of our province’s identity.

Finding the Inspiration

Some ideas come from my own photographs taken while exploring coastal communities, while others are inspired by memories of places I’ve visited over the years or come directly from a client for a commission painting. I pay close attention to the way light reflects on the water, the textures of old wood, and the colours that make each season unique. Sometimes a single scene captures my attention immediately; other times, I combine elements from several references to create a composition that tells a stronger story.

Planning the Composition

Before I ever pick up a brush, I spend time planning the layout of the painting. I consider where the viewer’s eye should travel, how the balance of light and shadow will work, and which elements deserve the greatest attention. A simple sketch helps establish the structure before paint is applied to the canvas.

Building the Painting

I work primarily with professional acrylic paints because they offer vibrant colour, excellent durability, and the flexibility to build multiple layers. Acrylics dry quickly, allowing me to gradually develop depth, texture, and detail throughout the painting.

I begin by blocking in the major shapes and colours, creating the foundation for the scene. Once the overall composition is established, I slowly refine the details, adding highlights, shadows, reflections, and texture. Each layer brings more life to the painting, whether it’s the weathered grain of a fishing stage, the ripples in the ocean, or the dramatic skies that Newfoundland is known for.

Capturing the Character of Newfoundland

One of my favourite parts of painting is recreating the unique character of our coastal communities. Every weathered building, fishing boat, and rocky shoreline has its own personality and history. Rather than simply copying a photograph, I aim to capture the feeling of standing there—the quiet mornings, the salty air, and the peaceful beauty that so many people recognize and remember.

The Finishing Touches

As the painting nears completion, I step back frequently to evaluate the overall balance. Small adjustments to colour, contrast, and fine details can make a significant difference. I want each painting to feel inviting and authentic, drawing the viewer into the scene.

Once I’m satisfied that every detail contributes to the story, the painting is finished and prepared for display.

More Than a Painting

Every original acrylic painting I create represents my appreciation for the landscapes, seascapes, animals, people, traditions, and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. My goal is not only to paint what these places and objects look like but also to capture how they feel. I also have this same feeling when painting something that is outside our province.

I hope that each piece brings back cherished memories for those who have lived here, inspires those who have visited, and introduces others to the remarkable beauty of this province.
