The painting “Come From Away” celebrates one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most iconic natural events—the annual arrival of towering icebergs carried south by the Labrador Current. A brilliant white iceberg rises above the deep blue Atlantic beneath a clear sky, creating a striking contrast of colour and light. The peaceful coastal setting reflects the wonder experienced by residents and visitors alike during iceberg season. The painting playfully references both the iceberg’s long journey from Arctic waters and the well-known Newfoundland expression used to welcome visitors. Rich textures and vibrant colours capture the beauty, scale, and quiet majesty of these natural wonders.
During the spring and summer, icebergs can be seen around the northern and eastern coasts of Newfoundland. They come in lots of shapes and sizes, 90% of them coming from the glaciers of western Greenland.
