Turtles hold significant cultural and spiritual importance across many societies, symbolizing wisdom, longevity, protection, and a connection to the Earth. In various traditions, turtles are revered as symbols of creation, stability, and even divine beings. Their slow and steady nature often represents patience, resilience, and adaptability.

While Newfoundland doesn’t have any native freshwater turtle species, it is visited by the endangered leatherback sea turtle during the summer and early fall. These turtles migrate to Newfoundland waters to feed on jellyfish near the surface.
